DC Oppos will have seen this mystery sign over the past 40 years - concealed since the 1970s. Yesterday DDOT took it down - it is actually a sign for the ill-fated I-695 South Leg. Only the section to Independence Avenue was completed, but it would have passed underground on the Virginia side of the Lincoln Memorial and along the mall before meeting up with the existing Southeast Freeway (the current I-695) as part of an “Inner Beltway. ”

DC signage is a trainwreck, and the Virginia side around the Pentagon/National Airport and Arlington National Cemetery are nearly as bad.  I don’t know how anyone functioned in this town pre-Waze.

Last time we used Waze/GMap s exclusively (we went for my mother-in-law’s interment at Arlington) and had no problems . Time before that we got insanely lost just trying to get back across the river to VA.

The same way they do now - ride in the left lane until you see the sign for your exit, then immediately slam on your brakes and cut across 3 lanes of traffic without signaling or checking the mirrors.
